How to Save Money on Your Oil Heating Bill

Temperatures are falling and, as the cost of energy continues to rise, it’s important to consider how to efficiently heat your home with oil, without breaking the bank. There are many ways to reduce your oil-heating bill whilst ensuring your home stays warm and cosy. Here are our top three tips:

Choose a Budget Plan to Spread the Cost

A budget plan is the best way to spread the cost of oil, and ensure it remains affordable throughout the year. Do you struggle to afford enough oil to heat your property during winter, but find it hard to put aside money during the warmer summer months? With a budget plan, the amount of fuel you’ll require for the year is estimated, and the cost split into equal monthly instalments. This is collected each month, by Direct Debit, to make sure you know exactly how much you’ll be paying each month. The amount is reviewed regularly, so you’ll never pay anymore than you need to.

Turn Down Your Thermostat

This might seem obvious, but it’s surprising how many families fail to take on this useful piece of advice. Turning down your thermostat by as little as 1oc can result in substantial savings across the year, as you’ll only use the amount of oil required to get your home to the optimum temperature. OFTEC, the Oil Firing Technical Association, has estimated that turning your thermostat down can cut your oil heating bills by around 10%.

Insulate Your Home

If your home is well insulated, it will reach the optimum temperature much quicker, reducing the amount of oil required. A poorly insulated home allows heat to escape from various parts of your property, with the majority lost from the walls (35%) or the roof (25%).
